"Road to Literacy" campaign
New Jersey After 3, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and expanding learning time in New Jersey, is embarking on its 3rd annual Road to Literacy campaign. Thanks to generous support from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Reading is Fundamental (RIF), and AT&T – students in afterschool programs throughout the state of New Jersey will participate in a “Semester of Service”, commencing on Martin Luther King Day through Global Youth Service Day (April 20-22, 2012). Participating afterschool programs will also honor New Jersey After 3’s READS! literacy initiative – aimed to keep kids on a positive Road to Literacy throughout their lives.
Over fifty corporate volunteers from Enterprise Rent-A-Car participated in the Martin Luther King "Road to Literacy" kickoff celebration on January 17, 2012. Volunteers visited the following NJ After 3 READS! supported afterschool programs and gave students more than 2200 books that were collected as donations at 115 participating Enterprise Rent-A-Car locations throughout the holiday season.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car also worked with New Jersey After 3 to create 2012 “Dream Journals” (as featured in picture above) that were also disseminated to each afterschool student. This customized literacy tool was designed with inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech – and was presented to students as part of a motivational activity – encouraging them to use their creative writing skills to record their own hopes and dreams!
“Our partnership with New Jersey After3 through the Semester of Service the past three years has been a very rewarding experience for us. The book drive and book fairs have been a great opportunity for us to model Dr. King’s commitment to community service by volunteering at local schools and help to develop literacy in many of the same communities where our employees and their families live and work,” – Terrick Smalls, Area Manager, Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
