New Jersey After 3's fifth annual Promising Practices Showcase and Award Reception!
Policy makers, educators, and nonprofit leaders from across the state gathered at the Trenton Marriott to celebrate the BEST Afterschool Practices in New Jersey!
Participants learned about promising afterschool practices through interactive workshops, panel discussions, and interacted with key stakeholders focused on the importance of expanding learning time in public schools.

Workshops:
The 2011 Promising Practice Winners delivered simultaneous workshops in which they described their practices, engaged participants in hands-on application of lessons and activities, and discuss how other sites can easily adapt them. Workshops were presented in two 45-minute rounds, so that participants were able to observe two Promising Practices each.
Panel Discussion:
The Promising Partnerships panel featured exemplary partnerships in expanding learning time across the State of New Jersey. Panelists discussed how increased coordination and collaboration between school districts and community partners facilitates improvement of afterschool learning opportunities for New Jersey students. Speakers included school officials, afterschool site coordinators, nonprofit executive directors, corporate philanthropists, and more - representing a broad cross-section of community members involved in out-of-school time learning. These leaders shared their experiences in the field, and provided perspective on challenges to overcome and an outlook for sustainability.
- Trenton Afterschool Partnership – In the 2009-2010 school year, New Jersey After 3 launched a unique partnership with Trenton Public Schools and the City of Trenton to expand learning time in all 21 district public schools for the first time, serving more than 2,400 students (nearly one quarter of the district’s students). Through coordination of resources, partners were able to save millions of dollars while serving more students than ever before and providing all students with a consistent and evidence-based afterschool model. An external evaluation of the pilot year, conducted by Policy Studies Associates, revealed significant benefits to student achievement and parent workplace productivity, due to student participation in New Jersey After 3 programs. Panel participants discussed the successes and challenges of this initiative, and spoke to replication and sustainability of such a district-wide afterschool model.
- Newark Global Village School Zone Initiative – New Jersey After 3 is partnering with the Newark Public Schools, New York University, Boys & Girls Club of Newark, Vacamas Programs for Youth, and other nonprofit and philanthropic organizations to expand learning time for the six feeder schools to Newark Central High School. The afterschool component contributes to a larger school reform strategy that incorporates principles outlined in Professor Pedro Noguera’s Broader Bolder Approach, including expanded learning opportunities (outside of the traditional school day), parent engagement, and character education, from birth to college. Panelists discussed the process of planning and implementing such a comprehensive venture that involves a multitude of partners and described the role of expanded learning time as a key piece of this reform effort.
- Orange Community Schools Model – In 2010-2011, New Jersey After 3 contributed to a new collaboration between JP Morgan Chase, Orange Public Schools, Community Options, and Family Connections to develop the afterschool component of a Community Schools model. The Central Campus Community School blends the best educational practices with a host of health and social services to ensure students are physically, emotionally and socially prepared to learn. Currently this program is supported entirely by school district and corporate funding with training, monitoring and technical assistance provided by New Jersey After 3. Panelists spoke about the origins of this endeavor, the unique contributions of each partner, and the philosophy behind the Community Schools model.
Award Reception
All Conference participants and special guests were invited to join New Jersey After 3 in celebrating accomplishments in afterschool during the 2010-2011 school year. After introductory remarks by New Jersey After 3’s Board Chair, Douglas Kennedy of Capital One Bank, the reception included an awards ceremony to acknowledge the Promising Practice Winners, the Afterschool Educator of the Year, and AmeriCorps members, who have devoted themselves to a year of service in the field. New Jersey After 3 acknowledged its Afterschool Champions – both Individual and Corporate – who have served as vocal afterschool advocates in broader conversations of education reform this past year. Dynamic student performances were interspersed throughout the reception, representing the diversity of program activity across New Jersey After 3’s network.
