TD Bank Charitable Foundation Supports
Student Literacy Efforts in Trenton
$15,000 investment made to New Jersey After 3 READS! Program
On May 18th & 19th, 2010 - Volunteers from TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, joined New Jersey After 3 at eight New Jersey After 3 afterschool programs in Trenton, NJ - operated by EducationWorks, Children's Home Society of NJ, and Boys & Girls Club of Trenton - to distribute free books to over 1,100 students. Volunteers from TD Bank helped distribute books to the afterschool students and engaged them in read aloud sessions with TD Bank’s Summer Reading Program book selection, A Chair for My Mother, by Vera. B. Williams.
This initiative was in alignment with the charitable giving arm of TD Bank’s recent donation of $15,000 to New Jersey After 3, to help expand the NJ After 3 Reads! program throughout the city of Trenton. The NJ After 3 Reads! initiative focuses on increasing students’ literacy by ensuring that youth have quality, engaging and age-appropriate reading materials at home. The NJ After 3 Reads! programs also engages students in motivational literacy activities that incorporate family and community members – a vital element of the TD Bank philosophy.
As America’s most convenient bank, we know the importance of encouraging students to read,” said Rob Curley, South Jersey market President, TD Bank, “and we are proud to partner with New Jersey After 3 to help our youth – especially as we approach the summer months. According to educators, summer reading is critical in continuing good academic performance and advancing literacy skills. Studies show that children who read several books during the summer maintain or surpass the reading skills they achieved during the previous school year. A staunch commitment to active involvement in the local community is a vital element of the TD Bank philosophy.”
