BREAKING NEWS: STATE BUDGET PASSES!

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed the Fiscal Year 2011 State Budget into law on June 29th, restoring $3,000,000 to New Jersey After 3. This restoration of public investment was one of a handful of items restored through the budget deal between Governor Christie and the Legislature on June 21st, demonstrating the widespread support of our innovative public/private partnership among State leaders, and validating New Jersey After 3’s position as a top priority for children and families of the Garden State.

This $3 million FY11 appropriation is one-third of the budget allocation that New Jersey After 3 was awarded in FY10. While understanding of the need for shared sacrifice during such difficult times for New Jersey, and pleased with the restoration of significant public support, New Jersey After 3 is faced with a significant challenge that will be met with an objective, entrepreneurial approach. We will be working with our Board of Trustees and organizational leadership to finalize contingency plans and strategies that ensure maximum impact with minimal resources.

New Jersey After 3 plans to take an aggressive stance in helping New Jersey students benefit from emerging Federal grant programs aimed at improving student achievement and transforming the structure of public schools to include more time. New Jersey After 3 programs expand student learning time by 40% each school day, and the agency anticipates working even closer with school districts and municipalities to align resources and efforts to improve student safety and academic success. The most recent online issue of New Jersey Jewish Standard highlights the crucial role that New Jersey After 3's nonprofit program partners played in the overall restoration campaign. 

As summarized by State Senator Loretta Weinberg (District 37) –  “It is an important program first and foremost for our children…although [the restoration] didn’t begin to fund what it should have funded, at least we got some of the money back (in the budget).”

TD Bank Charitable Foundation Supports Student Literacy Efforts at Trenton Afterschool Programs

Volunteers from TD Bank visited 8 New Jersey After 3 afterschool programs in Trenton, NJ, to distribute free books to over 1,100 students. This initiative was in alignment with the charitable giving arm of TD Bank’s recent donation of $15,000 to New Jersey After 3, to help expand the NJ After 3 Reads! program throughout the city of Trenton.

Volunteers from forty Enterprise Rent-A-Car branches donated books to New Jersey After 3 afterschool programs as part of the statewide Semester of Service initiative. The event was highlighted nationally by The Corporation for National & Community Service.
