In 2004, New Jersey After 3 was created to expand learning time through high-quality, cost-effective afterschool programs across urban, suburban and rural communities. As the first statewide public/private partnership of its kind in the nation, New Jersey After 3 works with public schools and community-based nonprofits to deliver effective, research-based afterschool programs each school day, expanding learning time for thousands of students by more than 40% in 114 public schools statewide.
New Jersey After 3 programs: (1) keep children safe between the hours of 3 pm and 6 pm; (2) improve student achievement; (3) support working families; and (4) promote positive youth development.
In a time of shrinking school budgets and escalating education costs, New Jersey After 3 ensures cost-effective, high-quality activities and experiences that support students, families and entire school communities.
New Jersey After 3 programs provide a unique environment where students find relevance in their math, reading and science classes, while immersing themselves in other subjects which no longer fit in the traditional school day frame.
Fitness, arts, and character education curricula are thriving throughout the statewide network as 45 non-profit partners share their ongoing research, experience and best practices.

Measurable Impact on Student Achievement
A recent, independent evaluation shows that students who participated in New Jersey After 3 programs for 2 or more years achieved significant gains in language arts skills and demonstrated improvements in study skills, math skills and computer skills.
These results are consistent with national reports that show high-quality afterschool programs improve student achievement and keep students on-track towards high school graduation.
A Cost-Effective Solution
A recent study conducted by The Wallace Foundation shows that New Jersey After 3 spends less than one-half the average cost of high-quality programs in the nation.
